Could we see a new Resident Evil announced in 2024?
A look at what may or may not happen in 2024 and beyond
Happy New Year! I apologize for the lack of posts over the holiday period, as work and year-end travel kept me preoccupied for the past few weeks. I hope all readers had a relaxing and enjoyable time.
Looking back, 2023 was quite a busy year for the Resident Evil franchise. VR Mode for Resident Evil: Village launched in February for PlayStation 5, followed by the long-anticipated Resident Evil 4 a month later. RE4 released to exceptionally strong reviews (the strongest since the original RE4, in fact), has won numerous prestigious awards, and has enjoyed record-breaking sales. Capcom has seemingly finished everything it set out to do with RE4 within the year, with Separate Ways and VR Mode both launching by December.
Capcom also continued its Mac gaming initiative by adding support for iPhone 15 Pro and iPads with M-series processors to Village, in addition to its existing macOS port from 2022. RE4 was also released for Apple’s devices right before the end of the year.
Longtime fans also finally got to see the main cast come together Avengers-style in Resident Evil: Death Island. For those who happened to be in Osaka, Universal Studios Japan offered up another year of its Biohazard The Extreme+ attraction.
For a non-anniversary year, 2023 was certainly a memorable one. The last time a non-anniversary year got this much attention was probably 2012, which was an RE extravaganza on multiple fronts and difficult to replicate ever again.
The inverse to such a jam-packed 2023 is that we’re going into 2024 without anything to officially look forward to. No upcoming RE games have been officially announced. The only hint we have is more remakes are on the way, based on a comment from RE4 Director Yasuhiro Anpo stating that he’d like to continue the remake lineup of RE games. We also only have fleeting reports of a potential live-action RE movie that is likely a few more years away.
So what might we see in 2024?
